Hélder Postiga spoke without filters in the 90+ videocast, distributed by A BOLA, and left a rich and revealing portrait of his journey in Portuguese football, the figures who marked him and the moments that helped to redefine the mentality of the National Team. Former Portuguese international, with spells at FC Porto and Sporting, Postiga revisited decisive episodes in his career, mixing behind the scenes, personal convictions and historical memory.
José Mourinho’s arrival at FC Porto appears as a true turning point, not just for the club, but for all of national football. Postiga remembers his first contact with the coach in an almost symbolic way: «I introduced myself to Mourinho as if he didn’t know who I was.»
The former player says about the coach’s immediate impact: maximum demands, redefined hierarchy and a new football language. “Until Mourinho arrived, I didn’t know what a defensive and offensive transition was,” he confesses.
In individual growth, there is a name that Postiga does not forget: Jorge Costa. «He was one of the most important people in my growth», he says, highlighting the leadership, daily demands and pedagogical role of the former Porto captain inside and outside the locker room.
Postiga’s path could have taken a different path, he reveals. The forward was very close to Luz: «I had a foot in Benfica and a phone call from Pinto da Costa made me return to FC Porto». An episode that reflects the weight of behind-the-scenes decisions in Portuguese football and the ability of the then president of the Dragons to influence.
Upon returning to FC Porto, Postiga also addresses the relationship with Co Adriaanse, in a period of transition after the Mourinho era. And, despite the changes of club and context, there is one constant that overrides everything: the National Team. «There is no greater reason to be proud than representing the national team», he highlights, in a statement that helps to understand the emotional connection he always maintained with the corner shirt.
The comparison between the two greats of Lisbon and Porto is made bluntly: «Sporting’s demands do not compare to FC Porto’s». A strong phrase, which reflects different internal realities and competitive cultures that marked the forward’s career.
Postiga also revealed a little-known role in the transfer market: «I suggested Jonas’s name to Benfica». The former Portuguese international recalls that the Brazilian “had offers for Saudi Arabia, Rome and Olympiakos and refused”, before becoming one of the most impactful figures in the recent history of the Luz club.
But it is in the Selection that one of the most symbolic moments of his testimony emerges. «Portugal-England is the game that changes the mentality of the Portuguese in relation to the national team». Euro 2004 marked a generation and Postiga was there, in a match that was engraved in the collective memory and also in the striker’s personal history.
The shirt, the context, the penalty shootout. And the eternal moment: «Panenka against England. When I went for the ball I already knew what I was going to do». It wasn’t improvisation, it was conviction. A technical gesture transformed into a symbol of confidence and change of mentality.
