The Bender Baskets Grünberg were not impressed for long by the defeat in Chemnitz the previous week. On the contrary: On Sunday, the Gallusstadt girls got back on the road to success and defeated the Talents Bonn/Rhöndorf with 81:58 (41:28). It was the fifth win from the last six games – and further evidence of the development of head coach Patrick Unger’s team in the 2nd women’s basketball league (North).
From the start, the baskets appeared to be much more grippy than they had been a week before. Grünberg defended attentively, forced Bonn to make difficult throws and repeatedly set pinpricks offensively. After a concentrated first quarter (23:13, 10th), the hosts further extended their lead in the second period (36:22, 18th) and went into the break with a comfortable 41:28 lead (20th).
Even after the break, Grünberg didn’t let up. Although the Talents tried to defend themselves using their physically strong interior players, the Baskets always had the right answer ready (54:32, 26th). With another 20:18 in the third quarter, the lead remained stable, the Grünberger women pulled ahead again and made things clear early on (61:46, 30th). Even in the final sequence (20:12), the people of Gallusstadt left nothing to be desired.
With the clear 81:58, Grünberg also secured the direct comparison against Bonn, the first leg was lost away with 61:79. “That was important, we wanted it to be so clear. At the end we also speculated on the direct comparison. So everything is good in the end,” explained Unger after the game. Overall, the coach was very satisfied – not only with the result, but also with his team’s performance and their continuous rise to mid-table.
The decisive factor against the Talents was once again the team unity. The scoring was spread across many shoulders, and important impulses also came from the bench. Above all, Tonisha Baker, who led the game with 19 points, eleven assists and an enormous presence. Charlotte Kohl impressed with a double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds), Emma Kramer (12) and Frieda Schlebusch (11) provided additional offensive relief. “Even the people who don’t start or get fewer minutes give so much gas. That’s just important, this solidarity – and it’s a lot of fun,” emphasized Unger.
