Lucas Eguibar, Arrietta Rodríguez and Álvaro Romero count down the hours to take part in the Milan-Cortina D’Ampezzo Olympic Games, which start this coming Friday in the transalpine country. Eguibar, who will face his fourth Olympic event, is a strong medal option. “My goal is gold,” he confessed in this newspaper. As for Rodríguez and Romero, they will forever cherish this first experience in an Olympic event at 23 and 22 years old, respectively.
For our snowboard representatives, the competition will be in the Livigno resort, whose snow complex is called ‘Livigno Snow Park’.
On Thursday the 12th all the activity will take place for the two riders from San Sebastian. First they will take part in the qualifying, where the important thing is the time to be completed and which will determine in which heat the 32 participants who compete for a medal will start. This type of qualification, like in Formula 1, will start at 10:55 in the morning, just after the women’s qualification.
The color of the number depends on what position it is classified in.

The discipline in which the Gipuzkoans Lucas Eguibar and Álvaro Romero compete consists of four riders going down a circuit simultaneously and trying to reach the finish line first.

With the times set, there will be eight rounds with four participants each where the first two in each series will qualify. According to the times achieved in the morning, the quartets will be made. The round of 16 will start at 1:45 p.m., the quarterfinals at 2:18 p.m. and the semifinals at 2:39 p.m. The last eight riders will be left here, divided into two rounds. The first two from each will advance to the grand final – where we hope that there will hopefully be a representative from Gipuzkoa – and which will be held in Livigno starting at 3:01 p.m.
Eguibar and Romero, at the DV facilities.
Eguibar and Romero know perfectly well the qualities and defects of their thirty rivals. They smiled during their visit to EL DIARIO VASCO when they were asked what could happen if they met in a batch. “Let it be in the final,” they said in unison, after Eguibar remembered that in other Olympic events he had already had to fight with his teammates.
The favorites to win the gold and great rivals of our representatives will be the Canadian Elliot Grandin, the Australian Adam Lambert, the German Martin Noerl and the Austrian Alessandro Hammerle, among others. In Beijing 2022, Hammerle won gold, Grondin with silver and the Italian Visentin with bronze.
This specialty, where the important thing is always the position, usually gives rise to spectacular jumps and fierce fights among the participants to obtain the best line on the course.

That is why new rules have been applied to make the descents cleaner and safer for riders. The speed has been limited somewhat so that the riders do not reach dizzying speeds.

Arrietta Rodríguez’s main mission will be to avoid doors at the highest speed in the slalom test. The San Sebastian native will take part in the Cortina D’Ampezzo resort, the usual arrival point for grand tours, such as the Giro or Tour, in the most charismatic test of alpine skiing. The slalom is a test of skill, technique and strength and the San Sebastian skier starts without any pressure although with a “tremendous desire to do well”, as she confessed a few days ago. The slalom is a descent with constant changes of route that lasts about 50 seconds. There are two sleeves and the two times are added.

Rodríguez is used to taking part in the FIS (International Ski Federation) events, one step below the European Cup events and two of the World Cup events where she is among the top 90 of 12,000 participants. On January 12, he took first place in the Chamonix slalom, in a FIS test and days later he participated in a European Cup test in the same season, occupying forty and thirty-sixth positions.
The slalom event will be held at the Cortina D’Ampezzo station on Wednesday the 18th, where Arrietta Rodríguez will fulfill a dream and become the second Gipuzkoan in history to participate in the Winter Games after Silvia del Rincón in Albertville 1992. She may be far from Shiffrin, Vonn, Rast or Aicher – big favorites to win the gold – but no one will beat the Donostiarra by desire. to do it well. He will ski with all of Gipuzkoa behind him.
