Beaten by Geneva in the last finals of the Championship and the Swiss Cup, Olympic therefore retained its control over the SBL Cup. But the Friborg club had to work hard to achieve its tenth title in this competition.
Manhandled by the Lions in the third quarter (27-16), clumsy on the free throw line, Thibaut Petit’s players had to wait until the end of the match to turn the table. However, they were greatly helped by the expulsions for five fouls of Juwann James, Noé Anabir and Boris Mbala.
A partial of 19-2
Trailing 75-68 at 6’10 from the final siren, Friborg managed a 19-2 partial in the final minutes to bring Patrick Pembele’s troops to their knees. Discreet until then, Natan Jurkovitz equalized at 77-77 before Chimezie Offurum and Jonathan Williams combined to seal the deal. The two men finished as their team’s top scorers with 23 and 18 points respectively.
Already bothered by Union Neuchâtel in the semi-final (89-82), Friborg therefore takes the lead over Geneva, its runner-up in the SB League standings, as the end of the season approaches. After being dethroned last season, Olympic intends to reestablish its domination over Swiss basketball.
