Liverpool has finally been able to record its first league victory of 2026. In the top match against Newcastle United, the national champion still fell behind through Gordon, but a double flash of class from Ekitike gave Liverpool the lead before half-time. Florian Wirtz and Konaté provided the icing on the cake in the second half.
How good this victory will be for Arne Slot. And he can thank one name in particular for that.
French attacker Hugo Ekitike turned things around against Newcastle United with two flashes of class. First he was in the right place to receive Wirtz’s cross, and less than two minutes later he did it all himself: with a punt he beat Nick Pope into the far corner.

Because just before that, Newcastle United had taken the lead thanks to Gordon, and that was not even undeserved.
But Ekitike’s double class flash ensured that Liverpool were allowed to rest with a lead. Did that first competition victory of 2026 finally arrive?
Then Arne Slot’s troops would no longer be allowed to give away the lead. And they didn’t.
While Newcastle seemed to be the dominant team in the first half hour with some opportunities, they were less active in the second period. Although Becker did need one good save to keep the equalizer out of his goal.
The visitors did not get any closer, and when Florian Wirtz made it 3-1 halfway through the second half on a pass from Mo Salah, the match seemed to be over.
Konaté was able to put the icing on the cake in the end with the 4th goal. Smiling faces at Slot and co, who achieved their first competition victory of 2026 and thus creep closer to the top 4.
