The controversy does not subside regarding the decision of the Regional School Office in Lombardy to close schools on February 6, 2026on the occasion of Olympics. On that day, in fact, the Olympic torch will parade through the streets of the Milanese city and the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Gamesat the San Siro Stadium. Also the Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditara spoke on the matter.

Possible schools closed on February 6, 2026 in Milan

From 6 to 22 February 2026 Italy will be a protagonist at an international level thanks to Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics. The organizational machine is coming to life and there could be some inconveniences in Lombardy and Veneto, on the days in which the races will be played or the various ceremonies foreseen in the program will take place. Also for students who live in the areas affected by the Olympic Games there could be some misunderstandings.

In Milan, for example, it was announced that on Friday 6 February, on the occasion of the Olympic torch parade, schools of all levels located inside the external ring road could be closed. A decision taken by the Regional School Office to lighten city traffic and avoid inconveniences during a day in which many people will flock to the city of Milan, also for the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Valditara’s words on the closure of schools in Milan

Giuseppe Valditara intervened in the debate whether it is appropriate or not close schools in Milan for the Olympics. Visiting a Milanese school, the Minister of Education and Merit said: “The issue of the Olympics is so important that it will bring dozens and dozens of heads of state to Milan and therefore I believe that, if the schools are closed for one day, since there will be a lot of traffic, you will certainly be able to tolerate this inconvenience“.

Valditara invited everyone to think “instead of worldwide resonance that the city of Milan will have and the fact that sport will be put first for several days, is put as a priority and this is very important, even for young people.” He then added that, possibly, schools located near the Olympic sites in the mountains, where the competitions will be held, will be able choose whether to activate Dad or not. Also in this case a controversy had already broken out, with families protesting in Sondrio against the possibility that their children would have to follow lessons from home due to the Olympic Games.

Families protesting against school closures for the Olympics

The words of Giuseppe Valditara they arrived to calm the anger of the families who have already written letters and appeals to the Mayor and Prefect. Citizens have no certainties about school closuresgiven that the news was given by the Prefecture, which also announced the list of roads that will remain closed in the so-called “red zones”.

The school directors have not yet prepared any circulars to inform studentsalso because they would be awaiting provisions from higher bodies. The question is whether schools will actually be closed for the Olympics on February 6 or whether boys and girls will still be able to attend lessons. And the doubt also concerns whether they will be able to do it in person or remotely, so as not to lose school hours.
