The career of Pilar Cordón It is part of the history of Spanish horse riding. The Aragonese Olympic rider, present this season at the Andalucía Sunshine Tourwas winner of a Grand Prix in the first edition and 32 editions later she continues to compete at the highest level.
The Andalucía Sunshine Tour is synonymous with history, continuity and international projection. Few examples represent it better than that of Pilar Cordón. She competed in 1995 in a project that was held in three venues, Dehesa Montenmedio, Sotogrande and Marbella. There were Michael Whitaker, Thomas Fuchs, Robert Smith, Paul Estermann, Marie Edgar, Manuel Malta da Costa and the British David Broome, one of the promoters of the circuit. Pilar Cordón was also there. In Dehesa Montenmedio, after the triumphs of the British Robert Smith in the first two major events, came the first Spanish victory in a Grand Prix of the circuit signed by Cordón with “Asterix”. On the final day, in the Grand Prix, she was fifth in a race won by Enrique Sarasola with “Minstrel”. The second venue of the first Andalucía Sunshine Tour was Sotogrande, where Pilar Cordón and “Asterix” won the Grand Prix.
Pilar Cordón’s return to Montenmedio reflects one of the great singularities of equestrianism, its intergenerational nature. Furthermore, the figure of Pilar Cordón acquires a special dimension in a sport that competes equally between men and women, but in which, upon reaching high competition, the number of Amazons is significantly reduced, especially due to family issues. Cordón is the only Spanish horsewoman who has participated in the Games in the Obstacle Jumping discipline. It was in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
