More than a week after the chaotic CAN 2025 final, the African Football Confederation is meeting its disciplinary committee this Tuesday. With one main question: will she severely sanction the excesses which marred the end of the competition?
After the astonishment, the sanctions? The disciplinary committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is due to meet this Tuesday, after the incidents that occurred during the final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations. Initial measures could be taken.
A week after the events, the controversies have not abated. This is why CAF is playing a very big role in the first decisions it could take this Tuesday. The image of the competition and the confederation is at stake.
An investigation opened to shed light on the incidents
During the final between Morocco and Senegal (0-1 ap), after a Senegalese goal refused for a slight push and without recourse to VAR, the referee awarded a penalty to the Atlas Lions after video intervention. A sequence which angered Pape Thiaw’s protégés and even led the Teranga Lions to leave the field without the authorization of officials. At the same time, Senegalese supporters entered the pitch and exchanges of blows were observed with stadium security.
Last Wednesday, CAF opened an investigation to shed light on the excesses. In view of the facts, the Senegal coach, Pape Thiaw, will obviously be affected by these potential sanctions, as will several players on the team.
With the 2026 World Cup in sight (Senegal is in France’s group), will these decisions be implemented during the World Cup? According to the CAF disciplinary code, sanctions only concern competitions organized by the Confederation. Still in this document, a postponement of suspension is provided for in the context of an expulsion, which is not the case during the meeting between Morocco and Senegal.
