McGill Athletes of the Week: Nicoletti & Dunn Honored

MONTREAL – Luca Nicoletti and Sonia Dunnboth natives of Ottawa, are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Jan. 25, 2026.

Nicolettia 21-year-old materials engineering senior, scored a meet-high 15 points and was part of three gold medal performances while setting two school records last week. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound sprinter led the McGill men’s track and field program to finish first of 19 teams at the 29th annual McGill Team Challenge at the Richard Tomlinson Fieldhouse, Jan. 23-24. He won the 300-metre race with a time of 34.28 seconds, then ran the leadoff leg of the winning 4×200 (1:27.63) and 4×400 (3:16.88) relay squads. The 4×200 time erased a 40-year-old school record (1:27.92) set in 1986. It was the second school record of the season for Nicoletti, who previously smashed the 300-metre dash in 34.11 seconds, erasing a 40-year-old McGill mark of 34.14 set in 1986. Nicoletti is a product of the Ottawa Lions track club who enrolled at McGill in 2022 from Paul Desmarais Catholic Secondary School.

Dunna 20-year-old pharmacology junior, won three gold medals in the experienced category as McGill finished first of a dozen schools from across Quebec, Ontario and the Maritimes at the Eastern Divisional Meet of the Canadian University Artistic Swim League (CUASL), a two-day competition held in Kingston, Ont., Jan. 23-24. Dunn was the only athlete to break the 200-point plateau, scoring 204.1150 en route to winning the solo routine. She also helped her squd win the duet (197.1342) and team (163.5109) routines, with the latter group achieving the highest degree of difficulty score in league history. The results leave McGill among the favourites to win a national title at the CUASL championship in Quebec City, March 20-22.

McGill athlete of the week award recipients receive a gift certificate from Poulet Rouge, serving healthy and nutritious meals since 2017. All students can get a 15% discount at the Poulet Rouge McGill location upon presentation of their student ID card.
