There isn’t a soul alive on the red side of Manchester who wouldn’t instantly confirm Michael Carrick on the bench after this dream week. First the victory in the derby against City, now the success at home to league leaders Arsenal (now +4 over the Citizens) which allows the Red Devils to move up to fourth place, overtaking Chelsea and Liverpool. At the Emirates Stadium the show begins with Lammens’ save in the 18th minute from Zubimendi’s header, but the second attempt is more fortunate: Saka catches Odegaard in the area, the Norwegian kicks towards the goal and intercepts Lisandro Martinez’s deflection which beats his own goalkeeper (29′). However, the guests quickly got back into the game, thanks to a gift from Zubimendi who missed a rather basic pass, opening the way for Mbeumo to skip past Raya and deposit it into the net in the 37th minute. However, what Dorgu creates for the comeback is an authentic jewel: the former Lecce player triangulates with Bruno Fernandes and then unloads a violent right-footed shot under the crossbar (50′). Arteta looks for solutions from the bench, in the end the equalizer comes from the usual free kick thanks to substitute Merino who resolves a confusing melee in front of the goal (84′). Overtaking mission: accomplished. Chelsea made no mistakes in the derby against Crystal Palace, winning 3-1 at Selhurst Park and moving into fifth place, overtaking Liverpool who were defeated yesterday by Bournemouth (here is the ranking). The third consecutive victory in all competitions for the Blues comes in a match where they only concede one great opportunity to their rivals. Mateta, in fact, appears in front of Sanchez in the 8th minute, but doesn’t angle the shot enough, allowing the goalkeeper to save it with his foot. The balance continues until the 34th minute: Canvot’s back pass launches Estevao, who takes off and crosses perfectly. The second goal came at the start of the second half, with Joao Pedro doing well to come back on the left and kick under Henderson’s legs (50′). Enzo Fernandez started the closing credits in the 64th minute, converting a controversial penalty due to an absolutely legitimate handball from Canvot, who in fact saved a goal. Crystal Palace also closed with ten men, due to Wharton’s expulsion for a second yellow card, but still found the pride of the net with Richards, who headed the ball clear of a melee following the development of a corner.
