Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open men’s singles
[멜버른=박상욱 기자] Novak Djokovic (Serbia, No. 4) confirmed his advancement to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open men’s singles with the withdrawal of his opponent Jakub Mencic (Czech Republic, No. 17) in the fourth round. Mencik withdrew from participation a day before the game as he was unable to participate due to a worsening abdominal muscle injury.
In the official announcement of the tournament and on his social media, Mencik said, “During the last games, my abdominal muscle injury progressed, and despite my best efforts, I could no longer continue the game. After consulting with the medical staff and team, I decided not to participate.”
This was Mencic’s first time advancing to the round of 16 of the Australian Open, and he added that it was a meaningful result for him to successfully advance to the second week of the tournament for the first time.
Mencic won a 5-set win against Pablo Carreño Busta (Spain, 94th) in the second round, and then won a two-set tiebreak against Ethan Quinn (USA, 80th) in the third round, complaining of physical strain.
Djokovic skipped one game and advanced to the quarterfinals. 38-year-old Djokovic was given additional time to recover.
Djokovic has not yet given up a set in this tournament, and is continuing his journey to win his 11th Australian Open title and 25th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic will face the winner of Lorenzo Musetti (Italy, 5th) and Taylor Fritz (USA, 9th) in the quarterfinals.
