It started at the beginning of the new year Catholic Sunday newspaper (Issue January 10/11 / No. 2) a survey in which eleven celebrities provide information about how the Bible shapes their lives. One of the respondents is the former Swiss football referee and current football commentator Urs Meierwho received the Swiss “Referee of the Year” award six times in a row from 1995 to 2000.
At the beginning of his statement on the Bible, Urs Meier referred to the words of Jesus, which the former FIFA referee reproduced as follows:
“Blessed are those who hear and keep the word of God.”
As a child, he always read these words while attending church services in his hometown of Würenlos in Switzerland, reports Meier, and goes on to explain that his understanding of the Bible was taught to him in religious education. The 67-year-old also describes that it has always been important to him in general “not only to know history, but also to learn from it”. This motivated him to “draw lessons for my life here and now” from the Bible. He emphasizes:
“The Bible taught me values, recorded boundaries and human characteristics that made me who I am.”
Urs Meier is convinced that the Bible can provide lasting guidance in life. It is worth reading the Bible “again and again” and studying the Holy Scripture “to understand why something is the way it is and how we can behave or change it,” says the Swiss football expert, who worked as an expert on football broadcasts for ZDF from 2005 to 2018 and can now be seen as a TV expert on Blue.
In summary, Urs Meier states:
“The Bible is still modern and a guide to life.”
