Cross-country skier Jonna Sundling has won the prestigious Jerring Prize for the first time. The Swedish people voted Sundling’s efforts as the biggest feat of the year.
Cross-country skier Jonna Sundling won the prestigious Jerring Prize for the first time. The Jerring Prize was awarded in connection with the Swedish sports gala. In 2025, Jonna Sundling took home three WC gold medals in the WC on skis in Trondheim.
The Jerring Prize is a prize instituted by the sports editorial office of Sveriges Radio. The award is named after the Swedish radio pioneer Sven Jerring. The award is also usually called “the people’s award”, as it is radio listeners who vote for the athlete or sports team that has made the best sporting performance of the year.
Sundling received 214,832 votes, while the Allsvenskan football champions Mjällby were second with 110,591 votes. Of the pre-favourites, Truls Möregårdh, Armand Duplantis or Ebba Andersson did not even reach the top five in the poll.
– To be voted for by the Swedish people is very powerful. I have probably never shaken my voice so much when I have spoken. I was nervous at school sometimes but this took the prize, said Sundling.
– I realized when I reacted that this touched me very much. I thought I could be a little cool. I was so moved and lost myself in what to say. It was such a joy to be awarded this among such talented athletes in Sweden. To be voted for by the Swedish people is also so powerful, she continued.
Sundling also received the award as the year’s best female athlete.
Among the other award winners at the sports gala was the pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who was chosen as the best male athlete. Discus thrower Daniel Ståhl received the award for the year’s sporting achievement.
