Frankfurt vs Karabakh: Promotion Hopes Dashed

Karabakh Agdam can dream of reaching the second round of the UEFA Champions League. The sensational team from Azerbaijan defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 thanks to a late goal from defender Bahlul Mustafazade (94th) and drew level with Galatasaray on points.

The Frankfurt team lost their last chances of promotion in the first game after parting ways with coach Dino Toppmöller under the leadership of interim coach Dennis Schmitt. Eintracht also conceded three goals in their fourth competitive game of the year.

Atletico can’t get past 1:1

In the race for a direct round of 16 ticket, Atletico Madrid couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray Istanbul. The finalist from 2014 and 2016 took the lead with a header from coach’s son Giuliano Simeone (4th).

Marcos Llorente maneuvered a cross pass from Galatasaray’s Roland Sallai into his own goal to equalize (20′). Atletico has to worry about a top eight place with one round before the end of the league phase.

At Galatasaray, the Viennese Yusuf Demir, about whom there are always rumors of departure, sat on the substitutes’ bench. After seven CL games, the Turkish champions have ten points, which could theoretically be enough for promotion.
