Figure Skating: Format Change & Artistry Focus

The International Skating Union (ISU) is evaluating the possibility of abandoning the current competition format in figure skating, which requires participants to compete in the short and optional program. If the changes are approved, the artistic performance of the athletes could be given more weight in the assessment.

The ISU informed coaches of the possible changes that could come into effect in 2027/2028 during the European Championships in Sheffield, Great Britain, over the weekend. in the season of the year.

In response to criticism that in figure skating a disproportionately large role is given to the evaluation of jumps, the ISU is examining the possibilities of introducing significant changes. One proposal envisages introducing a technical program lasting two minutes and 40 seconds, as well as an artistic program lasting three and a half minutes, for men and women in solo competitions, the Kyodo agency reported, citing its sources.

Currently, there are seven jumps in the optional program, but their number is planned to be significantly reduced to four jumps in the technical program. In addition, a certain number of points could also be awarded for unsuccessful jumps.

Although the proposal has drawn opposing views, the ISU explained that many find the current short and elective programs too similar.

The ISU is considering the possibility of changing the competition calendar from 2027/2028. in the “Grand Prix” series of the 2018 season, introducing a semi-final after the conclusion of the individual stages, followed by the grand final. Because of the longer season, the world championships would then take place in April instead of March.
