The aftermath of U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about Greenland’s annexation and tariff threats spread to sports stadiums. At the pre-game event for the National Basketball Association (NBA) game held in London, England, an uproar broke out as the audience loudly criticized the event.
On the 18th (local time), a match was held between the Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic at the O2 Arena in London, England. While the American national anthem was playing, a man in the audience shouted, “Leave Greenland alone!” This voice was met with applause and cheers from all over the stadium. At the time, the American national anthem was sung by actress and singer Vanessa Williams.
This protest took place immediately after President Trump’s recent remarks. President Trump warned that he would impose 10% tariffs from the 1st of next month and 25% tariffs from June on the eight European countries that oppose the United States’ intention to annex Greenland. When the United States previously mentioned the possibility of purchasing Greenland and even mentioned the possibility of military action, eight countries, including Denmark, Britain, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, dispatched troops to Greenland.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer drew the line, saying, “Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its future is a matter for Greenlanders and Danes.”
This is not the first time that President Trump’s foreign policy has been the subject of protest in sports. Last year, when President Trump announced that Canada could be incorporated as the 51st state of the United States and predicted an increase in tariffs, there were several cases of booing during the American national anthem at basketball and ice hockey games held in Canada.
