The burning of pyrotechnics caused an interruption lasting several minutes in Augsburg. After the change things go smoothly. There are plenty of goals. The two Freiburg goals once again came from corners.
This time, not even a two-goal lead against SC Freiburg was enough for FC Augsburg to win. Despite a lightning double strike at the start of a spectacular second half, coach Manuel Baum’s team had to be content with a 2-2 (0-0). Three days earlier, Augsburg had conceded a bitter equalizer in stoppage time against Union Berlin (1-1).
After a tough first half, things really got going in the second half. Alexis Claude-Maurice (47th) and Elvis Rexhbecaj (49th) gave Augsburg a seemingly secure cushion of goals.
But then SC Freiburg struck. Substitute Yuito Suzuki (60th) hammered a volley under the crossbar after a standard. The former Freiburg player Michael Gregoritsch cleared a corner from the dangerous Jan-Niklas Beste with his hand on the line, but Igor Matanovic (62′) was successful in the follow-up shot. It was Freiburg’s eighth goal from a corner this season – a league record.
Pyrotechnics obscure the view
At first there was little happening on the pitch. This was also due to chaotic people from the Freiburg block who paralyzed the game in the Augsburg icebox with pyrotechnics. The smoke was so thick that referee Martin Petersen had to stop the game.

The second 45 minutes made up for the pale first half. A header from Matthias Ginter landed directly at Claude-Maurice’s feet. The Frenchman didn’t hesitate for long and scored after a light touch from Lukas Kübler.
Kristijan Jakic was apparently injured on the stairs while walking out of the players’ tunnel before the restart – substitute Rexhbecaj scored with his head shortly afterwards. But Freiburg quickly recovered and equalized with two standard goals.
