Kayne van Oevelen, goalkeeper of FC Volendam, turned down an offer from Ajax last year. The 22-year-old closing post was not enthusiastic about the Amsterdam offer and opted for the gradual path The Eel Farmers.
Van Oevelen has been the first choice under the bar at Volendam for almost a year and a half. When he was just two months old, Ajax came knocking. The Amsterdam team wanted to sign the goalkeeper on a free transfer and entered into discussions. “The goalkeeper coach of Jong Ajax came here and actually didn’t know anything about everything,” Van Oevelen says in conversation with Football International his story.
“I thought that was a shame, I expected a little more from it. Immediately after that conversation I also stated: We don’t need to discuss further. I’ll stick with FC Volendam“, says Van Oevelen, who a few days later extended his contract with Volendam until mid-2028.
At Volendam, Van Oevelen spent almost an entire season in the Kitchen Champion Division and now he plays in the Eredivisie every week. “It was also not the right time to go to Ajax,” he says. “I had an expiring contract and had arrived in the summer with 28 games in the KKD to my name. If I continue to play everything this season, I will soon have an additional 34 Eredivisie matches. Then you enter a different club, especially if you also have to pay a transfer fee. After this season I would like to take the next step, that is no secret. But first maintain with FC Volendam. That is now my full focus.”
