Thanks to a late goal by Robert Mühren against Sparta at Het Kasteel, FC Volendam has qualified as the seventh and penultimate club for the quarter-finals of the KNVB Cup: 1-2. Earlier in the day, SC Heerenveen won 3-1 against RKC Waalwijk in the eighth finals.
It seemed like it would end in an extension in Rotterdam for a long time, but enough happened in the final phase. After Spartan Lushendry Martes accidentally stepped on Robert Mühren’s foot, referee Martin van den Kerkhof initially awarded a penalty in the 89th minute. But after VAR intervention, that decision was reversed.

Sparta got away well, but moments later Mühren struck mercilessly in injury time after a quickly taken free kick from Brandley Kuwas. The striker nicely found the far corner with a diagonal shot. It was enough for a win and a place in the quarter-finals.
Kuwas and Santos score before halftime
Without the injured Henk Veerman, but with AZ mercenary Dave Kwakman immediately in the starting line-up and with Roy Steur, the older brother of Ajax player Sean, on goal, Volendam started the cup match at Hert Kasteel.
The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute through Kuwas. After a quick combination, the occasional striker had an open chance and he did not fail.
With a nice shot from about 25 meters exactly in the corner, Ayoni Santos brought the Rotterdam team to the same level: 1-1. It was the first goal in professional football for the 20-year-old midfielder.
After the break, Aurelio Oehlers hit the intersection with a nice effort on behalf of Volendam and Mitchell van Bergen missed an opportunity on behalf of Sparta. Goalkeeper Steur saved the day. An extension seemed to be in the making, but Mühren still decided the game.
Uneken bicycle kick not enough for RKC
Despite tough opposition from RKC Waalwijk, SC Heerenveen also secured a place in the quarter-finals. The number nine of the premier league defeated the number ten of the first division 3-1.
The home team had the initiative from the start in the Abe Lenstra stadium, but it took until five minutes before halftime for the spell to be broken. Luuk Brouwers served Jacob Trenskow, who neatly found the net.
With that meager margin, Heerenveen could not sit back and in the 65th minute RKC even leveled. It was a beautiful goal by Jesper Uneken. The striker first shot hard at goalkeeper Bernt Klaverboer and then was so alert and skilled to score from the rebound with a beautiful bicycle kick.
RKC could dream of a stunt, but after ten minutes Heerenveen took the lead again. The Norwegian Oliver Braude scored his first goal in his 84 games for Heerenveen after a good attack.
Final agreement for Trenskow
Afterwards, substitute Amourricho from Axel Dongen was still dangerous, but the ‘super sub’ of the match against Feyenoord (2-2), when he scored after 17 seconds, was not as happy as last Sunday.
The loanee from Ajax was responsible for SC Heerenveen’s third goal. Trenskow shot the ball into the corner on a pass from Maxence Rivera.
