Actually, FC Sochaux and RC Lens were supposed to duel in the Coupe de France on Saturday. Instead, fans from both camps became closer, even though the game didn’t even take place.
As in the Bundesliga, “adverse weather conditions” made it impossible to play the game on Saturday. When this news became official, some Lens supporters had already arrived. However, the direct return journey was not an option for the very loyal souls, because the game was promptly rescheduled for the next day.
As the French newspaper ‘L’Est Républicain’ reported, the stranded people encountered outstanding hospitality. Some Sochaux fans spontaneously let the supporters from Lens stay overnight at their place.
A local restaurant also served free drinks to Lens guests who came to eat. According to the article, two bakeries also offered free croissants and coffee to the unexpected customers.
“The solidarity of the Sochaux supporters is heartwarming,” said Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Association, on Sunday.
The FC Sochaux players were also unintentionally hospitable. The third division team lost 3-0 to the first division team from Lens in yesterday’s catch-up game. For some RC fans it may have been the culmination of an unforgettable away trip.
