Klauer & Holtschke Win Gold: Western Championships Recap

Christopher Klauer (Union Lüdinghausen) and Brian Holtschke (TV Refrath) didn’t really have to stretch until the quarter-finals. And that, too, was less due to the opposition “than to ourselves,” as the zero eight admitted. Both in the duel with Simon Schenk (1. BC Beuel) and Karl Sufryd (1. BV Mülheim) as well as in the semi-final meeting with Gladbeck’s Fritz Binus and Gladbeck’s Jonas Schmid (21:10, 18:21, 21:17) and finally in the final against the Mülheim pairing of Jarne Schlevoigt/Nikolaj Stupplich (20:22, 21:11, 21:10) the top seeded duo gave up a round “because we were too passive”. In all other sections, Klauer and Holtschke fully lived up to their role as favorites and won gold in the NRW title fights in the Drei-Burgen-Arena. For Klauer it was the fourth double triumph in five years.
