FC Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup in a spectacular Clásico against Real Madrid. The Catalans defeated their arch-rivals 3-2 (2-2) in a thrilling final played in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
For German coach Hansi Flick it was already the fourth title with Barça. In the previous season, the ex-national coach also won the Supercup as well as the championship title and the Spanish Cup.
Goal celebration in stoppage time
Raphinha (36th minute) had put Barcelona in the lead before things became extremely turbulent in stoppage time in the first half: Vinícius Júnior (45th+2) initially equalized for Real, former Bundesliga striker Robert Lewandowski (45th+4) immediately scored to give Barça the lead again – but Gonzalo García (45th+6) set the final point in the first half with the 2-2.
In the second half, as in large parts of the first 45 minutes, Barça had more possession of the ball. After Raphinha (73′) took his team’s third lead with his second goal, Real couldn’t come back despite all their efforts. Even the late red card for Barça’s Frenkie de Jong (90.+1) after a serious foul against substitute Kylian Mbappé did not change the result. National player Antonio Rüdiger did not play for Real after his recent knee problems.
Ter Stegen is fit again – but with no chance of playing
National goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen also watched the spectacle from the Barça bench. The 33-year-old reported fit again after his recent injury. Ter Stegen suffered an injury before the 5-0 semi-final win against Athletic Bilbao and had since left Saudi Arabia. The goalkeeper, who lost his regular place at Barça and has to worry about his World Cup chances, had only just returned after a long injury break. At the end, he celebrated on the field with his teammates.
