Austrian skier Magdalena Eggerová tore her anterior cruciate ligament, partially also the lateral ligament, and damaged the meniscus in her right knee when she fell in the World Cup downhill in Zauchensee on Saturday. The 24-year-old downhill skier is awaiting surgery and her season ended prematurely.
The competition in Zauchensee had to be interrupted for more than 20 minutes after the fall of the local athlete. The Austrian ended up in the safety net, got up quickly, but injured her leg and had to be taken off the slope by a helicopter.
In the hospital, she underwent a magnetic resonance examination, after which the doctors made a diagnosis. As reported by the Austrian Skiing Association (ÖSV), Eggerová will undergo surgery at a clinic in Innsbruck.
Egger had a breakthrough season, during which she achieved her first World Cup podium finish. In the December convention in St. Moritzi finished second behind American Lindsey Vonn.
After the injury, she will also miss the start at the February Olympics, she is the second best ranked Austrian in the classification of the convention.
“We are sorry, because Magdalena has had good results and presented herself with high-quality performances. We are also sorry about what awaits us in February,” said Roland Assinger, the head coach of the Austrian downhill skiers, according to APA.
