The first match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, the two great matadors in current men’s tennis, was won by the world number one from Spain. Alcaraz won in two sets in the demonstration match in Incheon, South Korea: 7-5, 7-6 (6).
Sinner, who started the new year as the global number two, could partly blame himself for this. He had two breaking opportunities in both the first and second set, but they turned out to be wasted on the Italian. Alcaraz, on the other hand, had enough to take the first set with his one break point at 6-5.
The second set ended in a tiebreak. After a ‘mini-break’ on both sides, Alcaraz reached match point after surviving a set point. Sinner, who will defend his Australian Open title in Melbourne in a week, was unable to serve that away, after which the Spaniard won the rally and the match.
Both players, who peppered their performance in front of 12,000 spectators with jokes and tricks, reportedly collected more than 2 million euros for the demonstration party.
