Former international Uliana Semenova, the most decisive player in the history of world women’s basketball, has died at the age of 74, leaving an indelible memory, also in our country. In 2022 she was one of the protagonists of the third promotion of the Spanish Basketball Hall of Fame.

He was 74 years old and had been suffering from insurmountable physical problems for years. At more than 2.10 meters tall, she emerged as the most decisive player in European and world basketball, and in 2022 she was one of the protagonists of the third promotion of the Spanish Basketball Hall of Famewhose ceremony, however, he could no longer attend.Born in 1952 in the city of Zarasay, her impact was immediate and her achievements were both with her club, Daugawa of Riga, and with the Soviet Union team, with whom between 1966 and 1987 she had unprecedented dominance. With Daugawa he won 15 Soviet League titles, 11 European Cups, one Ronchetti Cup (1987). And with the USSR team, almost the same: two gold medals in the Olympic Games, another three in the World 10 in the Eurobasket. During the 18 seasons in which he participated in international competitions, his team did not lose a single official match.
At the end of his career, already suffering from ankle osteoarthritis, he played the 1987-88 season in Spain in the ranks of the Tintoretto de Getafewhich he made runner-up in the League and where he left a very pleasant memory among his teammates and rivals.
The Spanish Basketball Federation wants to send, on behalf of all Spanish basketball, its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uliana Semenova, as well as to the Latvian Federation.
