Paris Saint-Germain has won its first prize of the season with the Trophée des Champions. In a swirling final in Kuwait, Olympique Marseille seemed to be on its way to its first trophy in 14 years, but the French Super Cup still went to the national champions after penalties.
The fact that the final of the French Super Cup was played at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait was clearly not to the liking of the supporters. In protest, many did not make the long journey.
PSG did not need the vocal support, as after 13 minutes Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé was able to take advantage of weak defending at Marseille. The French attacker lifted the ball with feeling over goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
For a long time, PSG seemed to have the final under control, until Mason Greenwood scored and converted a penalty fifteen minutes before the end.
Three minutes before the end, things seemed to go completely wrong for the Parisians when defender Willian Pacho put the ball into his own goal under pressure from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Yet PSG still crawled through the smallest hole. In injury time, Gonçalo Ramos was able to force penalties, in which goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier proved invaluable with two saves.
For PSG it is the fourteenth Trophée des Champions in club history. They won the Super Cup for the fourth time in a row, the twelfth time in 13 years.
