Ahn Se-young & China’s Badminton Rivalry | India Open 2024

(MHN Reporter Lee Hyun-ah) Korean women’s badminton stars Ahn Se-young, Kim Ga-eun (Samsung Life Insurance), and Shim Yu-jin (Incheon International Airport) engage in a domestic fight in the women’s singles at the India Open.

According to Chinese media outlet Baidu on the 7th, an early clash between top Korean players is expected in the upcoming 2026 India Open women’s singles.

In the 2026 India Open women’s singles, Korea’s Ahn Se-young, Kim Ga-eun, and Shim Yu-jin are likely to face each other from the beginning of the tournament. The winner is expected to meet Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the semifinals.

This bracket is expected to put pressure on Korean players from the beginning, as the top 16 players in the world rankings will face each other in succession.

As the bracket for this tournament was decided by lottery for players excluding seeded players, there was a possibility that Korean players would meet each other in the early rounds.

The India Open is the Badminton International Federation (BWF) Super 750 tournament held in New Delhi, the capital of India, from the 13th to the 18th of this month. According to the rules of the Super 750 competition, participation is mandatory for the top 15 women’s singles world rankings unless there is a special injury or reason.

Among Korean players, Ahn Se-young, world number one in women’s singles, will participate as a representative, and Kim Ga-eun (16th) will also participate. Ahn Se-young is continuing her steady performance by becoming the first women’s singles player to record 11 wins in a single season on the BWF World Tour last year. Ga-eun Kim took third place in the China Masters (Super 750) last September.

If the bracket had been evenly distributed, each player could have individually aimed to advance to the quarterfinals, but in this matchup, with three players crowded into the same section, there is a greater possibility that a confrontation between Korean players will unfold from the beginning.

According to the bracket released on the 6th, Ahn Se-young will face 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist Nozomi Ohara in the first round. Ahn Se-young and Nozomi Okuhara are scheduled to face each other in the round of 16 of the Malaysia Open on the 8th, so the two players will face each other in succession.

Shim Yu-jin and Kim Ga-eun will face each other in the first round of the round of 32, and the winner will face either Ahn Se-young or Nozomi Okuhara in the round of 16. Because of this, there is a high possibility that there will be consecutive confrontations between Korean players.
