Santo Domingo, Dec 6 (EFE).- Cuban right-hander Aaron Sánchez, of the Toros del Este, was chosen this Tuesday as the winner of the Pitcher of the Year award of the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (Lidom) championship.
Sánchez was chosen as the winner of the award that recognizes the pitcher with the best performance in the tournament, in the vote carried out among specialized journalists who cover the incidents of Dominican winter baseball.
In the election, Sánchez beat his colleagues Óscar De La Cruz and the American Patrick Weigel, of the Estrellas Orientales, the closer Jean Carlos Mejía, of the Tigres del Licey, as well as his teammate, the North American Joe Corbett, of the Toros del Este and also the American Grant Gavin, of Leones del Esído.
Sánchez, who arrived at the Toros’ training camps looking to earn a spot on the roster for the Dominican championship, established himself as the leader of the team’s starting rotation and as the most dominant pitcher in the winter baseball season.
The Cuban right-hander showed his durability from the mound, managing to cover five or more innings in each of his eight starts, collecting six appearances in which he covered six or more innings.
Sánchez, who ranked third in innings pitched (46.1), had six starts in which he scored one earned run or less and in total, he never allowed more than two earned runs in his work with the Bulls.
The veteran pitcher, who only scored eight earned runs, struck out a total of 34 and only walked nine, limiting the opposition to hitting for an average of just .208 against his pitches, which earned him the lead in percentage of earned runs allowed (1.55), while leaving a record of 4 wins and 2 losses.
Sánchez’s contribution was vital for the Toros to win second place in the regular series and qualify for the Dominican League postseason. EFE
