When Karim Adeyemi entered the training ground in Marbella on Sunday morning in the constant rain, he had already reported to his superiors. For his outburst of anger in the last game before the winter break, ÖFB star Marcel Sabitzer’s colleague at Borussia Dortmund had to pay a high fine after a conversation with managing director Lars Ricken and sports director Sebastian Kehl – however, according to SID information, the sum of 90,000 euros reported by the media is not correct.
BVB did not want to comment when asked.
Even before his misconduct in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-0), Adeyemi had already made negative headlines due to his trouble with the judiciary for illegal possession of weapons. The repentant sinner was forced by the club to do community service with children in the Nordstadtliga.
Such topics are always a nuisance for coach Niko Kovac. Offensive player Adeyemi had several clashes with opponent Kevin Diks against Gladbach, and later even with referee Sven Jablonski. Kovac reacted consistently and took the hothead off the pitch. Only Kehl prevented Adeyemi from disappearing directly into the dressing room in frustration.
“I know Karim very well, Karim is a very, very good boy by nature,” said Kovac at the training camp in Spain: “I know that he made a mistake. He will certainly change that again accordingly.”
Because BVB is dependent on the 23-year-old in terms of sport. An Adeyemi at his best can make the difference. In the first half of the season, however, he was only able to do this in phases. Six goals and three assists in 22 competitive games for the black and yellow can be improved.
Adeyemi should now hide all sideshows. According to Kovac, he had enough time over Christmas and the New Year to reflect on his behavior. Ultimately, the fast winger wants to play his way into Germany’s national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s World Cup squad with good performances.
And then? His contract with BVB ends in June 2027. Either Adeyemi is extended or he would have to be released in the summer if he is not to move on a free transfer the following year. According to Bild information, the BVB management expects at least 60 million euros. However, there are currently no specific inquiries. Therefore, the full focus is now on preparing for the restart on Friday at Eintracht Frankfurt. Then Adeyemi should also make positive headlines again.
