Constantly hitting the basketball against the basketball hoop backboard made of foldable panels, freezing the display in a minus 20 degree freezer… .

This is a cross-section of the ‘Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Power Show’ that Samsung Display is determined to present at ‘CES 2026’, the world’s largest electronics and information technology (IT) exhibition, which opens on the 6th (local time).

Samsung Display announced on the 4th that it will hold an exhibition for its customers at this CES under the theme of ‘A new era of experiences created by artificial intelligence (AI) and displays.’

The key observation point of this exhibition is the ‘hard and smart OLED’ that goes beyond just a high-quality screen and becomes the face of a robot and can withstand extreme environments.

◆’Crazy durability’ that breaks the prejudice against foldables and takes care of safety as well

The space that will catch the attention of visitors is the ‘Robot Basketball’ zone. Samsung Display created a basketball goal backboard by attaching 18 foldable panels. Here, the robot arm throws real basketballs in succession, impacting the panel.

An experiment to compare durability with competing products by dropping a steel ball onto the foldable panel from a height of about 30 cm will also be revealed. We are confident that we will break the prejudice that ‘folding screens are weak’ and prove before our eyes that they are overwhelmingly durable and resistant to external shocks.

The ‘refrigerator test’ aimed at the electronics (automotive electronics/electrical devices) market is also something to see.

In a cold environment of -20 degrees Celsius, the liquid crystal display (LCD) hardens and the response speed slows down to 200 ms (milliseconds) compared to room temperature, but Samsung’s OLED maintains a response speed of 0.2 ms. In an autonomous car running at 100 km/h, this difference in reaction speed determines the braking distance of about 2.8 m.

Refrigerator testing is a ‘silent demonstration’ that safety can be guaranteed even in extreme cold.


◆ What if you turn the robot face into a display?

The AI robot was given a face using OLED.

The ‘AI OLED Bot’, which will roam throughout the Samsung Display exhibition hall, has a 13.4-inch circular OLED like a face. Existing displays are square screens, but by taking advantage of OLED, which can freely transform into circular or spherical shapes, we propose a future where AI communicates more intimately with people.

The AI OLED bot demonstrates its role as a ‘robot assistant’ in a university classroom, informing students of class cancellations or providing professor information. Normal robot teaching assistants answer questions by voice, but the AI OLED bot is equipped with a display, so it can easily answer assignment content or class absence plans even in a class environment where voice commands and the use of speakers are difficult.


◆Picture quality beyond limits… Take care of portability as well

Samsung Display predicted ‘destruction of specifications’ in terms of picture quality and portability.

Quantum dot (QD)-OLED for 2026 TVs, which will be unveiled for the first time at this exhibition, is the first self-emitting display to achieve a maximum brightness of 4,500 nits (1 nit is the brightness of a candle). QD-OLED, which combines the brightness of each RGB to form the highest luminance (screen brightness), has higher color reproduction and perceived luminance compared to competing products of the same luminance, and through this, image quality improvement technology using AI can be further strengthened.

A variety of ultra-high resolution micro displays for extended reality (XR) devices will also be introduced. ‘RGB Olledos’ for XR headsets, which has a pixel density (5000PPI) three times that of a 4K TV in a 1.4-inch size the size of a watch dial, will also be displayed for the first time. OLEDOS is a display with a pixel size of tens of micrometers (㎛) by depositing organic materials on a silicon wafer. Among them, RGB-type OLEDS implements colors without separate color filters by individually depositing red, green, and blue OLEDs, so it has a wide color expression range and does not change color even at various viewing angles.


◆Warning to lose weight on laptops and ‘be careful of accidents’ when using rear window of car

The ‘diet’ was successful in laptop panels. Instead of the existing method of using two glass substrates, the ‘Ultra Thin (UT) One’ technology, which uses only one lower substrate, was applied, reducing the thickness and weight by 30% each. Although it has become lighter, the refresh rate can be freely adjusted from 1 Hz to 120 Hz to minimize power consumption.

The way we communicate on the road is also changing. The 34-inch OLED display for taillights warns cars behind of danger by displaying phrases such as ‘Accident Ahead.’ An 18.1-inch large screen curved in an L-shape is installed between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat, helping the driver intuitively operate vehicle functions.
