FIFA Peace Prize: Law & Controversy

Funny times.

On December 5, Gianni Infantino presented the FIFA Peace Prize to his great friend Donald Trump to reward him for “his extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity in the world”. Less than a month later, the President of the United States has justkidnap the president of another country, Nicolás Maduroand his wife, after having carried out airstrikes on Venezuela in the name of the fight against narcoterrorism. And international law in all this? Very little for him.

FIFA’s “Mister Peace” ordered that the Venezuelan president be transferred to New York to answer, among other things, for “ conspiracy to commit acts of narcoterrorism », « conspiracy to import cocaine » et « conspiracy to possess automatic weapons and destructive devices against the United States ».

Trump also said he was ready to lead Venezuela pending a transition “safe, appropriate and judicious”. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said « deeply alarmed » et « concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected »emphasizing that “These developments set a dangerous precedent.”

Oddly, Infantino did not react.
