Anthony Joshua: Driver Held After Nigeria Crash – Investigation Updates

The man who drove the car involved in a road accident in which British boxer Anthony Joshua was injured and two other passengers killed was taken into custody after leaving hospital, a police spokesperson said on Thursday (January 1).

The driver, who was lightly injured, “is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident,” said Oluseyi Babaseyi of the Ogun State police. “The investigation is ongoing,” he continued, emphasizing the “confidential” nature of the investigations, without specifying whether the driver would be subject to prosecution.

The bodies already repatriated?

On Monday, the man was driving the car in which Joshua and two of his relatives, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were traveling on a busy highway linking Lagos and Ibadan (southwest), when the SUV crashed into a stationary truck. According to the Nigerian Police and Ogun State authorities, Ayodele and Ghami died instantly.

Initial investigations showed that the vehicle was speeding and that a tire had burst before the accident, according to the Ogun State Road Traffic Control and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).

After leaving the hospital on Wednesday, Anthony Joshua went with his mother to the funeral home where the bodies of his team members were being prepared for repatriation to Britain. A government source suggested to AFP on Thursday that the remains of the victims had perhaps already been repatriated. The whereabouts of the boxer are currently unknown.
