The third place in the medal table of the Binational Games stood out
The end of the year is coming and it is the time to take stock of the sports activities and competitions of the IND Valparaíso. The national system of sports competitions had an outstanding performance for the region in both the under 14 and youth School Sports Games, and mainly the third place in the XXVI Binational Games, which took place in the Maule region.
School sports games under 14
The JDE is the main national school sports competition. In the Valparaíso region, 20,578 students from 518 educational establishments throughout the region participated, who competed in communal, provincial, regional, national and South American stages.
The disciplines in competition in the under 14 female and male categories were: chess, athletics, adapted athletics, handball, basketball, cycling, soccer (without a national final), futsal, judo, swimming, taekwondo (without a national final), table tennis and volleyball.
The under 14 national final took place in September in the Metropolitan region. The Valparaíso region stood out with the gold medals of:
Alonso Hormazábal (Inst. Chacabuco Los Andes) – athletics
Renata Cabrera (Valparaíso Lutheran School) – judo
Colegio Sunnyland de San Felipe – men’s volleyball
Youth school sports games
In the Coquimbo region in October, the national youth final of men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball was held. The Valparaíso region won gold medals with Colegio Patmos in women’s basketball and Liceo Mary Graham de Villa Alemana in men’s volleyball. Liceo Bicentenario Cordillera de San Felipe won bronze in women’s volleyball and Colegio Aconcagua de Quilpué was fourth in men’s basketball.
South American school under 14
The under 14 South American school competition took place in December in Asunción, Paraguay. The region was represented with the silver medals from the Sunnyland School of San Felipe – men’s volleyball and from the Patmos School in men’s 3×3 basketball.
XXVI Binational Andean Integration Games
In November, the 26th edition of the Binational Andean Integration Games – Christ the Redeemer was held in the Maule region. The competition for the federated female and male youth category brings together the regions of central Chile: Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O’Higgins and Maule, and the Argentine provinces of Córdoba, San Juan, San Luis and Mendoza.
The competing disciplines were: athletics, basketball, handball, cycling, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis and volleyball, giving life to a week of healthy competition and fraternity. The Valparaíso region had the participation of 401 athletes who took part in the process, of which 137 competed in the Games.
The Valparaíso region took third place in the overall medal table, highlighting the 21 swimming medals, with 13 gold, 05 silver and 03 bronze. Among the most relevant performances are the gold medals of Daniel Quass, Damián Quass, Pedro Aguilera, Matías Preuss and Joaquín Valdés.
In athletics, the gold medalists at the Binationals were; Constanza Seguel from CD Atlético Limache (triple jump) and Lautaro Zapico in javelin throw.
For the regional director of the IND, Alejandro Blamey, the “balance of the national skills system was very positive for the region this year. In the School Sports Games we had outstanding collective and individual performances and in the school South American Games, they also won medals. While in the Binational Games, we returned to the podium in the general medal table, something that had not happened for more than fifteen years. Swimming, for example, brought 21 medals, with 13 golds and several national records.
Regarding the 2026 competitions, the sports authority added “2026 will be a year full of important competitions and sporting events for the region, since we will host the national final of the School Sports Games in September, so the best schools in the country will meet in the region. And at the federated youth level we will have to travel to Mendoza for the Binational Games.
Higher Education Sports Leagues
Ten higher education institutions in the Valparaíso region took part in the LDES, with the participation of 1,497 female and male athletes. The participating institutions were: UNAB, UDLA, DUOC-UC, Inacap, USM Sede Viña del Mar, Escuela Naval, Apolinav, UAI and U. Santo Tomás.
The sports in competition were: basketball, volleyball, soccer, futsal, swimming and table tennis.
