Matz Sels’ situation at Nottingham Forest seems to be at a standstill. Analyst Mike Vanhamel outlines how the recent choices were made and what this means for 2026.
From base to bench
Sels had an exceptional season in 2025, with individual recognition and strong performances at club and national team. Yet he was on the bench in the last league games, while another goalkeeper was preferred. That turnaround came unexpectedly after a year in which he played a key role.
The club had a turbulent start to the new season. Tensions between the previous trainer and the owner caused instability, which translated into early interventions. After a short period under a new coach, the sporting line remained missing, which led to further intervention.
Playing style
According to Vanhamel, the approach of the first trainer suited Sels better. “The way of playing under Nuno suited Sels, but with Postecoglou you didn’t feel that match at all,” it sounds at Sporza. The instability in the defense played a role in this. At the same time, Sels made some mistakes himself, which increased the pressure.
