The coach of the Valencia women’s B team, Fernando Martin and three of his children are missing following the capsizing of a tourist boat in Indonesia, the state agency Antara announced on Saturday.
Fernando Martin’s wife, Andrea, and one of their daughters were among seven people rescued, including four crew members and a tour guide, according to search teams.
The boat was carrying 11 people when it sank near Padar Island and not far from the popular destination of Labuan Bajo on Friday evening, Antara said.
Mission coordinator Fathur Rahman told AFP his team found debris and pieces of the ship’s hull near where it sank.
The Labuan Bajo port authority attributed the sinking to strong waves of up to three meters, the Indonesian agency also said.
A minute of silence in his tribute
In a statement published on its website, which plays in the Spanish third division, Valencia confirmed the disappearance of the coach, who coached the Valencia B team in the third division: “Valencia CF is deeply saddened by the death of Fernando Martín, coach of the Valencia CF women’s B team, and three of his children in a tragic boat accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities. The club would like to express its support and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Valence CF, the Valence CF women’s team and the VCF Academy at this difficult time. »
As the search continues, Valencia players paid tribute to the coach and his family by observing a minute’s silence upon returning from training on Saturday.
