Mahoya Basketball Center: 2026 Opening Date | News

The macroproject promoted by La FEDE on its 70th anniversary will mean a before and after

Just days before the beginning of 2026, in which the Basketball Federation of the Region of Murcia will turn 70 years old, we proudly announce the great central project that will represent a before and after in the development of regional basketball. And next January 2 will be the date on which our president, Juan Carlos Hernández, will lead an event together with great figures of international basketball in which the first stone of the next Basketball Technology Center developed by our entity will be laid: the Mahoya Basketball Center.

As our president explains, the choice of location responds to a clear commitment to resilience, mental toughness and adaptation to extreme conditions, values that “every good basketball player must develop from an early age.” At the event next Friday, where the first stone will be laid, Dylan Ennis, Aina Ayuso, Vítor Faverani and Shaquille O’Neal, who will be named ambassador of the project, will be present. The American center himself declared on his social networks his enthusiasm for sponsoring the Mahoya Basketball Center: “I like Calorsitou Mursianou,” said Shaq.

The complex will have six 3×3 outdoor courts, a pavilion with capacity for 1,500 spectators, physical training areas with natural dunes and another multifunctional pavilion with strategic orientation to take advantage of the east wind as an additional defensive factor. As a latest development, it will incorporate a heliport and a parking lot with capacity for 1,000 vehicles.

Additionally, the center will include:

  • Controlled heat shooting sessions to simulate tight finishes
  • Resistance training with movements between dunes
  • Specific technical training programs “without air conditioning”, to improve decision-making under pressure

The project has been inspired by international success models: “If other countries train at altitude, in the Region of Murcia we will train in real basketball survival conditions,” said Juan Martínez, Secretary General of the Federation. “Our goal is to make heat an ally, not an enemy,” he said.

The Mahoya Desert Technical Center will host concentrations of U12, U13 3×3, U14, U15 3×3 and U16 Autonomous Teams, the FEDE Summer Camp and Technical Training Days for coaches and referees, who must also pass physical tests before accessing the facilities.

The forecast is that the works will begin “as soon as sufficient shade is found” and that the complex will be operational before the start of the next season, as long as the thermometer allows it.
