The national goalkeeper, Esteban Alvarado, announced his retirement from professional football after his time at Deportivo Saprissa.
The now ex-footballer confirmed the news at a press conference with the club on the afternoon of this Friday, December 26.
Saprissa published an emotional video about his farewell, which shows the initial moments of his career, as well as different stages of the goalkeeper at the club.
Esteban Alvarado’s career
The historic goalkeeper was part of the remembered Under 20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009, where he became the only national goalkeeper to win a golden glove as best goalkeeper in a world cup competition.

Alvarado made a career abroad in teams like AZ Alkmaar from Holland, and Trabzonspor from Türkiye. In national football he wore the shirt of the big three: Saprissa, Alajuelense and Herediano. He also had a stint in Limón and the UCR.
He was Cup champion in Holland, he won six trophies in the national tournament in Costa Rica: 4 with Saprissa and 2 with Herediano. To his credit, there are also two national Super Cups and one Cup Winners’ Cup.just like a CONCACAF Sub 20.
