The Superprestige cyclocross in Heusden-Zolder for the women was exciting and had some venom in the final round. It became a bit bitter between Blanka Vas, Inge van der Heijden and Aniek van Alphen. “For me it was a racing incident.”

Behind the back of winner Amandine Fouquenet, Aniek van Alphen, Inge van Der Heijden and Blanka Vas fought a tough duel for second place. This resulted in a collision on the final lap at a right-angle bend.

Ultimately, Vas crossed the finish line in 2nd place, but she did receive a few curses from Van Alphen. The Hungarian didn’t care about it.

“There was one moment of hesitation,” says Vas about the reason for entering the final round. “I saw Inge take over, so I thought she wanted to pull. But she stopped in front of me. It was a very strange moment. I thought: I won’t go myself, because I am on the limit.”

Skittles

Van Alphen could explain that strange moment. “Blanka looked at us to see why we were not driving, but we are also driving for the Superprestige classification. We were a bit competing against each other. And I understand that Inge does not want to be in the lead with me in her wheel.”

Vas was the third dog in that skittles game, which literally became a skittles game in the final round. Vas hit Van der Heijden and Van Alphen on the inside.

“I didn’t think it was very neat in that bend,” Van Alphen responded. “One of the three of us would be the victim. Now it was Inge and that is not fun this way.”

“Frustration? In one corner we were all sitting next to each other,” said Vas. “No one wanted to brake, but that is normal in a battle for the corner. Aniek was in the middle and that is a shame for her. But for me it is a racing incident.”
