Antonsson’s Australian Football Career

Marcus Antonsson’s football career began at home in Unnaryd. He played there until a few months before his 18th birthday when he decided to seek his fortune inside HBK. At the end of his second season in Bollklubben, he had to make his Allsvenskan debut away against Djurgårdens IF in October 2010.

At the time of his debut, Lasse Jacobsson was a coach at HBK and the following year it was only in the summer that Josep Pep Clotet gave him the chance. In the Spaniard’s last match as coach, Marcus had to make a substitution against AIK. There were significantly more chances when Jens Gustafsson took over and in the last game away to Mjällby he got to be a starting player for the first time.

In 2012 in the Superettan, he was a substitute in all matches but jumped in on 18 occasions. However, there was only one goal and it was in the away match against Umeå in May. However, Antonsson would answer for one more goal during the season – and it was a bit of the year’s goal, and maybe even the decisive goal for promotion to the Allsvenskan. Because when he scored 3-0 at home against Sundsvall in the first qualifying match, it meant in practice that HBK were ready for the Allsvenskan.

Back in the Allsvenskan in 2013, he was again a substitute in most of the matches, but he accounted for four goals, all of which gave important points for HBK. He decided in the last minute away against Syrianska, equalized against the same team at home at Örjans vall and in the last round he scored both goals when it was 2-2 against IF Brommapojkarna.

In 2014, he was only in the starting eleven on one occasion during the first half, while in the autumn he played most of the matches in the attack together with Mikael Boman. It would take until round 26 before the first goal came when he ran into a ball at Grimsta against IF Brommapojkarna. Another five goals were produced by Antonsson in the coming rounds, when he scored double goals both against Kalmar FF and Falkenbergs FF.

In 2015, he transferred to Kalmar FF and won the internal shooting league there on twelve goals. After a fine spring the following year, he signed for Leeds United, where he got his old coach Josep Pep Clotet as assistant coach. In the first season, he did not get much playing time in Leeds and was therefore loaned to League One team Blackburn Rovers in August 2017.

In the summer of 2018, he signed for Malmö FF and helped push them to the Europa League. At first it went well when he lost his place, he was loaned out to Stabaek BK in the fall of 2020.

Before 2021, he was loaned to HBK, who were back in the Allsvenskan to get playing time, which he got throughout the season. During the beginning of the series it went well, but he, like the whole of HBK, had a tough time in terms of goals. When the loan was over, he chose in 2022 to sign for the Allsvenskan newcomer IFK Värnamo. It went really well for Marcus, who throughout the season was in the absolute top scoring league of the Allsvenskan.

In 2023 he signed for Al-Adalah in Saudi Arabia, later moving to Western Sydney Wanderers. In the summer of 2025, he went back to IFK Värnamo, which fell out of the Allsvenskan.
