Becerra became the first Mexican to be at the top of the world ranking in her modality
The Mexican archer Maya Becerra closed 2025 as one of the most important figures in compound archery at an international level. During the season, she became the first Mexican to reach first place in the world ranking in its modalityan achievement that set a precedent for sports in the country.
That recognition was backed by a series of results in top-level competitions. Calf won three medals at the Gwangju World Championshipsadded two medals in the World Games held in China and accumulated six medals in the World Cup series, including the Super Final, which consolidated his position in the international elite.
The goalkeeper recognized that the process was the result of several years of perseverance. “This year has been a little unreal, I had had increasingly consistent years, I was fourth place for a long time, last year I won pure silver,” he explained, taking stock of his evolution within the international circuit.
Becerra noted that 2025 represented the turning point in his career. “I think it has been the year of dreams, I definitely feel very happy, I have worked a lot for this moment, now I have to enjoy it,” he expressed, referring to the accumulated effort that finally translated into titles and world leadership.
With a 13-year career in archery, Maya has maintained sustained growth, especially in the last five. Last July he reached first place in the world ranking, a condition that allowed him to reach the World Championship with competitive support which was reflected in the obtaining of two titles that had been denied in previous editions.
That performance too strengthened the presence of Mexico in the composite modality. The goalkeeper became a key piece of the competitive level that the country shows in the international ranking, where she currently remains in the forefront.
Looking ahead to the next cycle, Becerra made it clear that the work will not stop. “We are going to continue working, We are number one in the world in the world ranking so i am I’m sure that next year there will be more medals, We wait for that pass and we want the Olympic medal,” he said.
The impact of her season was recognized with the National Sports Award in the non-professional category, a distinction she received along with her coach. Karen Montellano. With that support, Maya Becerra is emerging as one of the main cards for Mexico to seek classification by mixed team heading to Los Angeles 2028, where compound archery will have its Olympic debut.
