The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting a new owner, reports The Athletic.
The NHL club is being sold to a Chicago-based family.
The sale will land at the equivalent of SEK 16 billion, according to the newspaper.
However, the deal must first be approved by the NHL’s confederation board before it becomes official, the newspaper writes.
The buyer is the Hoffmann family, with roots in Chicago.
The Hoffmann family already owns the Florida Everblades in the ECHL (third highest hockey league in North America). The family company’s CEO David Hoffmann is said to have long wanted to buy up an NHL or NBA club – and that will now be the case.
The price tag
However, buying the Pittsburgh Penguins is not free.
According to sources for The Athletic, the sale is expected to land somewhere between the equivalent of 15.8 and 16.7 billion Swedish kronor.
This will be the 13th time in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 58-year history that the club has changed hands.
Criticized current owner
The Penguins’ current owner – Fenway Sports Group, which is now selling the club – has not been very popular with Penguins fans, according to The Athletic.
This as the company has no connection to the city of Pittsburgh, while the team has performed poorly since taking over.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently fifth in the NHL’s metropolitan division. The Swedes Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell and Filip Hållander play in the team.
