Final victory in the Intercontinental Cup: Paris wins their next title
In Qatar, Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain beat Flamengo in the final. The goalkeeper becomes a hero – but the world footballer disappoints.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain have won the Intercontinental Cup, adding another trophy to their impressive collection of titles. The Champions League winner beat Brazilian club CR Flamengo 2-1 on penalties in the final in Qatar. After 90 minutes and after extra time the score was 1-1.
The newly crowned world footballer Ousmane Dembélé came on as a substitute for PSG in the 78th minute – and didn’t have a good day. The offensive star missed a great chance to make it 2-1 in extra time and shot the ball over the goal in the penalty shootout. PSG still won because goalkeeper Matwei Safonov was able to save four of five penalties.
The favorite from Paris took the lead with a goal from Chwitscha Kwarazchelia (38th minute). But Flamengo equalized with a penalty from Jorginho (62′).
Follow-up event to the Club World Cup
The Intercontinental Cup was held under this name for only the second time and replaced the previous annual Club World Cup. This was held last summer with 32 teams and will take place every four years in the future.
Flamengo reached the final on Saturday with a win against Pyramids FC from Egypt. PSG as Champions League winners was set for the final.
