Neutral menu vs divisive menu The group leader of Forza Italia in the Municipality of Capannori, Matteo Scannerini, presented a question against the Palestinian “flavors for peace” menu, proposed in municipal school canteens on 11 December. These are the dishes: pasta with tomato and bay leaves, falafel, fennel and potato crudités. A Trojan horse, a cunning and evident attempt to indoctrinate and corrupt the Italian table games with foreign food. But Scannerini misses nothing, and here is his courageous complaint: “School catering must be a place of neutrality, education and union, not a field on which to convey identity or, worse, political messages. For this reason I presented a question to the city council (…). The school canteen is not the place for symbolic or anti-narrative operations (…). We have Italian cuisine recognized by UNESCO as an intangible heritage of humanity and it is on this that we should build food education courses shared, without resorting to the ethnicization of food or initiatives that risk dividing instead of uniting. I asked the administration if it does not deem it appropriate to bring school canteens back to criteria of greater sobriety and neutrality.”. From now on, only neutral spaghetti with tomato sauce and patriotic Milanese cutlets.
