Navratilova: Fierce Trump Criticism in Tennis

Whether political statements from top athletes are important or not, one thing they are in any case is that they are extremely rare. Martina Navratilova, born in Czechoslovakia, was always an exception. Even after the now 69-year-old accepted US citizenship in 2001.

And Navratilova doesn’t give a damn about the incumbent US president, as she emphasized again in an interview a few days ago. “I escaped from a totalitarian regime and I will not be silenced again in hell,” said Navratilova. During Trump’s first term in office, several athletes expressed criticism, but now Martina Navratilova sometimes feels like she’s screaming into a black hole.

“I still find it helpful for my well-being, and I also think I can shed light on a few things,” the legendary left-hander continued. “I don’t necessarily want to change people’s minds, I just want to get them thinking so they can see what’s actually going on.”

“If you stay calm, to me that means you agree to everything.” And she definitely doesn’t do that.

During her fantastic career, Martina Navratilova has won 157 WTA tournaments, nine of them at Wimbledon alone. She was at the top of the world rankings for 332 weeks.
