Venezuelan authorities arrested the head of an independent intelligence agency on Saturday website Punto de Corte, political scientist Nicmer Evans. His relatives and Venezuelan non-governmental organizations informed about it.
According to Foro Penal, the regime of authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro currently holds at least 889 political prisoners, the AFP agency wrote on Sunday.
The 50-year-old Evans wrote on social media on Saturday that he was visited by members of the Venezuelan secret service, Sebin, who took him in for questioning. “They say they want to interview me, I’ll go voluntarily. We’ll see how it all turns out. I can handle this situation, I have nothing to worry about,” he said Evans in a video published on the X network.
AFP representatives of non-governmental organizations describe the practice when Sebin takes one of the opponents of the Maduro regime for questioning, but the person questioned does not return and ends up in a prison or disappears without a trace.
The leader of Venezuela’s main opposition alliance, María Corina Machado, received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo this week, which was accepted by her daughter Ana Corina Sosa, who dedicated it to all Venezuelan political prisoners.
The opposition, with the support of Western countries, is seeking a democratic regime change in the country, whose president is not recognized by the United States or many other countries after last year’s controversial elections. However, despite pressure from the US, Maduro refuses to give up the government and continues to repress the opposition, for which he faces US and European sanctions.
