Wout van Aert’s program includes eight crosses this winter (for the time being). It is no coincidence that Van Aert rides all his races in Belgium.
Antwerp (December 20), Hofstade (December 22), Heusden-Zolder (December 23), Dendermonde (December 28), Loenhout (December 29), Mol (January 2), Zonhoven (January 4) and the BK in Beringen (January 11).
Van Aert consciously chose Belgian crosses
The common thread throughout Van Aert’s calendar: Belgium. And that is no coincidence at all, because Visma-Lease a Bike and Van Aert also want to limit the travel days as much as possible.
“That is one hundred percent an argument,” says his trainer Mathieu Heijboer The Newspaper. “We are really not going to look for extra taxes. We have not started looking for it overseas, where you also have travel time.”
Not much racing abroad this season
It is one of the reasons why Van Aert chose to skip last Sunday’s World Cup in Sardinia. Although there are few crosses this season that are not held in Belgium.

The next one is Benidorm on January 18, but Van Aert will be in the area during that period due to an internship and could therefore drive. Furthermore, there are only Hoogerheide on January 25 and the World Cup in Hulst on February 1, just across the Belgian border in the Netherlands.
