Bamberg’s home game against Mainz was dedicated to the UN campaign Orange the World, which has been drawing attention to violence against women and girls since 1991. The color orange stands for hope, courage and a future free from violence. It was also important to the Medicines per Click Bamberg Baskets and the entire organization to stand up for this extremely important issue and set an example.
The course of the game
Bamberg got off to a perfect start and were already 9-0 up after less than three minutes. The Mainz women slowly found their game and Jordan Emyle Barron shortened the score to 13:12 in the 6th minute of the game. From here on, both teams were neck and neck again and the score was 16:16 going into the first quarter break.
The game remained close in the second half. After the medicines with a click Bamberg Baskets were initially a little ahead (20:16/12th), it was again Jordan Emyle Barron who gave the guests the first lead of the game with a three-pointer (21:24/18th). But head coach Samuel Gloser’s team remained focused and was able to regain the lead with a 5-0 run by the break.
“I’m very proud of the team for how we did today”
The Bamberg women then came out of the locker room with great energy. Just 85 seconds had been played in the second half when the lead was able to increase to double figures for the first time (41:30/22nd). The third quarter clearly belonged to the hosts, who were even able to pull away further (54:38/28th). However, this game was far from over, as with a 7:1 run the guests came back to 55:45 before the start of the final quarter.
And the lead continued to shrink. With two successful free throws, Dilara Özdemir made it 55:49. But Faith Alston & Co. countered and kept the Mainz women at bay. There were just under five minutes left to play (60:54/36th) when the gap had not changed. Two minutes before the end, Sarah Spiegel made the preliminary decision with her successful layup to make it 65:56 (38th). With 62:41, the Medicines click Bamberg Baskets won the rebound duel very clearly in the end, which made victory possible for them in the end despite a poorer three-point and field throw rate.
“First of all, I’m very happy with how we trained during the week. We had a good atmosphere. We worked hard and you could see that today. We executed our game plan well from the start and were able to put a lot of pressure on Taylor Golembiewski,” said Bamberg’s head coach Samuel Gloser. “We pushed them from the start and didn’t let them get into their game. That gave us the opportunity to finish quickly offensively in transition and start a run. You could see that in the energy today. We were ready for this game from the start. This is a very important win to stabilize ourselves in the middle of the league. I’m very proud of the team, the way we did today. The way we did as a team, especially when Mainz held up against it again and then scored, was cool Stayed, did our things and finished the game was very good.”
