The relief pitcher Devin Williams doesn’t seem to care too much about what Yankees fans think about his new contract with the Mets. Or, you find his reaction a little ironic.
Williams’ three-year, $51 million contract with the Mets became official Wednesday, joining a short list of former Yankees pitchers who have recently moved to Queens, including Luis Severino and Clay Holmes.
The two-time National League Reliever of the Year took to social media to let Yankees fans know that he doesn’t understand their messages.
“For a lot of people who didn’t want me back on their team, they’re pretty angry in the DMs.”Williams said on her Instagram story.
The Yankees acquired Williams from the Brewers last winter, thinking they were getting one of the best closers in baseball.
Bad season with Yankees
In his only months with the Yankees during 2025, Devin Williams had a turbulent season: he started as a closer, but after suffering several slip-ups he lost that role in Julyand his ERA finished at 4.79 — the worst number of his career.
Still, more advanced statistics suggest that part of his problems came from bad fortune “with balls in play,” as he posted a 2.68 FIP, 1.13 WHIP and averaged 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 67 appearances.
Devin Williams’ direct statement makes it clear that, beyond the contract, his arrival in Queens seeks to mark a declaration of independence, while rekindling the intense rivalry between both New York franchises.
