The 48th Italian Badminton Championships began in Palermo and were characterized by some surprises. In the men’s singles four seeds left the draw prematurely. Diego Scalvini (GSA Chiari) was defeated in three sets (18-21; 21-19; 21-13) by Luca Bellazzi (BC Milano) while Adrian Telfser (ASV Mals) lost in two sets (21-17; 24-22) against Rosario Chinnici (Città di Palermo). The other two seeds eliminated were Matthias Frank (ASV Mals) and Nicolò Volpi (Brescia Sport Più) respectively defeated by Enrico Baroni (GSA Chiari) (21-7; 21-15) and by Marco Danti (ASV Uberetsch) (21-10; 14-21; 21-14).
In the women’s singles there were many top seeds missed, but certainly the most surprising were: Sofia Galimberti (ASV Uberetsch) and Anna Sofie De March (ASV Mals). The former was overcome in three sets (21-14; 14-21; 21-16) by Hannah Mair (SC Meran) while the latter lost in two sets (21-15; 21-18) to Linda Bernasconi (BC Lario).
The top seeds in men’s doubles and women’s doubles are all ahead.
Only the number one seed, made up of Alessio Catalfamo and Pia Kopania (GS Fiamme Oro/ASV Mals), defeated in two sets (21-13; 24-22) by Marco Danti and Katharina Koessler (ASV Uberetsch/SSV Bozen) who skipped out in the mixed doubles.
The seventh Italian Para Badminton Championships will also start tomorrow.
