Mohrs: “Strong as a bear” excellence applications from Lower Saxony
Three universities from Lower Saxony have applied for the nationwide university of excellence competition. The state government is optimistic about the process.
Lower Saxony’s Science Minister Falko Mohrs is optimistic about the applications from Lower Saxony universities in the nationwide competition to become universities of excellence. The universities of Oldenburg and Bremen entered the race together, and the Leibniz University of Hanover and the Hannover Medical School (MHH) also submitted “strong applications,” said the SPD politician in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”.
“All three applicants from Lower Saxony have a great chance of coming out of this competition successfully,” explained Mohrs. The application from the universities of Oldenburg and Bremen is the only one with an international character because it builds a bridge to the university in Groningen. “This fits in very well with the whole idea of thinking European in excellence research.” The state is supporting the three universities as best as possible in the excellence competition.
Mohrs had previously stated that Lower Saxony should have at least one elite university from 2027. At least two clusters of excellence are a prerequisite for a university to apply as a university of excellence. Funding for the elite universities begins on January 1, 2027.
